EDMONTON ¡ª Today is World Obesity Day, and Âé¶¹Ó³» (AHS) has free services and resources to help Âé¶¹Ó³»ns reach their health and lifestyle goals.
Obesity is a complex chronic disease characterized by abnormal or excessive fat accumulation that impairs health. In Canada, it is a leading cause of Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, heart disease, stroke, arthritis and cancer. In Âé¶¹Ó³», Statistics Canada estimates nearly 200,000 Âé¶¹Ó³»ns are living with obesity.
Edmontonians can access a variety of weight management supports that are offered online, over the phone and in person:
- Weight Management Workshops (online, group sessions) ¡ª Learn effective ways to develop healthier habits, increase your physical activity and improve nutrition.
- (online, self-guided) ¡ª Learn ways to start improving how you manage your weight and health.
- STEP Forward - Supervised Transitional Exercise Program (in-person in Edmonton, St. Albert and Sherwood Park) ¡ª Led by a kinesiologist in a small group setting, you will learn about setting fitness goals, the benefits of exercise, and ways to move safely and more confidently in your home and community.
- Health Link Dietitian Service (phone) ¡ª Registered dietitians provide general information about nutrition. Health Link dietitians can also help determine if you need further assessment or nutrition support. Call 811 and ask to speak to a dietitian.
- Weight Management Information Line (phone) ¡ª Dietitians, registered nurses and psychologists provide advice and information about weight management, obesity and treatment options. Call 825-404-7460 and press 2, Monday to Friday, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. (except statutory holidays).
- (online) ¡ª This virtual monthly support group is led by registered nurses and dietitians, and is designed to help people maintain a healthy lifestyle after bariatric surgery.
