Mental Health Therapist

Supporting mental health

Mental health therapists empower people struggling with mental health or addiction issues with greater coping skills to live their lives.

In this role, they work independently or as part of a team with people of all ages and use a variety of treatment modalities including individual, family, and group therapy to address mental health difficulties to make a difference in communities, families, and individuals¡¯ lives.

Compensation

$41.12 - $54.61 per hour

Social work, psychology, psychiatric nursing, nursing, or occupational therapy degree

Registration

Duties

  • Provide assessment, provisional diagnosis, treatment, crisis intervention, clinical consultation, case management, education and referrals
  • Develop, implement, monitor and evaluate treatment plans in consultation with the client, treatment team, and family
  • Perform crisis intervention and outreach stabilization services
  • Advocate for clients, liaise with and provide referrals to appropriate agencies and services

Make a Difference

  • Promote and facilitate mental health, healthy coping mechanisms, stress management, relationship management, and navigating life transitions
  • Develop training programs and workshops for staff, service providers, clients, families, and community agencies
  • Establish and maintain mental health and addictions community resources
  • Raise awareness and reduce stigma towards mental health and addictions in the community

Work Collaboratively

  • Educate, support, and work with clients and families, healthcare professionals, community organizations, and the public
  • Collaborate with an interprofessional healthcare team including other therapists, nurses, physicians, administrative staff, and managers/leadership
  • May provide work leadership and direction to other members of the healthcare team
